Brother Directors of St. Paul's Institution
Bro. Gandhi Thangarajoo (16 May - 28 August 1909)
Born in France to ethnic Indian parents, he was appointed the school’s first Brother Director in 1909. He passed away on 6 September 1909 in Seremban.
Bro. Basilian (26 December 1909 - 28 March 1914)
A French Brother Director who expanded the old school building. He later died in Vietnam on 9 July 1945.
Bro. Adrian Edmund (29 March 1914 - 27 April 1921)
Born in England, he was transferred to Taiping in 1921. He died on 5 August 1925 at the age of 54.
Bro. Lewis Edward (28 April 1921 - January 1928)
An Irish Brother Director who founded the St. Paul's Athletic Association, later renamed the Old Paulians' Association. Under his leadership, St. Paul's became a powerhouse in soccer and athletics while also improving academic standards.
Bro. Dominic John (June 1928 - January 1939)
Another Irish Brother Director, he is best remembered for establishing the St. Paul's Debating Society. He passed away on 30 November 1966.
Bro. Barnitus Kennedy (17 January - 12 August 1931)
Born in Ireland, he pioneered the annual Medical Inspection for students. Later appointed Brother Visitor in 1945, he died in Penang in 1965.
Bro. John Lynam (12 August 1931 - 30 June 1933)
An Irish Brother Director who navigated challenges during the Great Depression. He was later transferred to Manila and then Hong Kong, where he served as Director of St. Joseph's College. He died at 78.
Bro. Joseph Brophy (2 July 1933 - 4 September 1939)
An Irish Brother Director, his key contributions included constructing the school hall and upgrading the school field. He was later reassigned to Singapore.
Bro. Anselm Conde (4 September 1939 - 11 January 1941)
Born in France, he was a renowned Geography teacher before becoming Sub-Director (1943-1965). He passed away in Penang on 5 May 1969.
Bro. Henry (11 January 1941 - December 1946)
A French Brother (born 1886) who served the La Salle Brothers for 45 years. He famously refused to remove the school’s name during World War II. He died in Penang on 17 July 1959, aged 73.
Bro. Lawrence Henry (3 February 1947 - 9 January 1953)
The first Malaysian Brother Director (of Indian descent), he played a crucial role in post-war reconstruction. He passed away in 1974.
Bro. Chronan Austin (January - December 1953)
An Anglo-Burmese Brother of Irish Catholic heritage, he had previously taught at St. Paul’s before returning as Director.
Bro. Casimir L'Angellier (January 1954 - December 1959)
Born in Singapore to Eurasian-French parents, he served as Sub-Director (1942-1944) and later oversaw the construction of the Mont La Salle campus. He led the school’s Golden Jubilee celebrations and received the PJK in 1957. He died in Hong Kong in 1977.
Bro. Celestine Jennings (January 1960 - December 1963)
An Australian Brother, he expanded the school with the addition of the AVA room. He passed away in Queensland on 1 August 1991.
Bro. Thomas Dunne (January 1964 - December 1969)
An Irish Brother who had previously taught at the school in 1940. His tenure saw the renovation of the school hall, the introduction of the afternoon session, and charitable initiatives for the poor. He was later transferred to St. Xavier’s Institution, Penang.
Bro. Felix Donahue (1 January 1970 - 12 February 1975)
Born in Ireland, he made history by admitting girls into Forms IV and VI. He renovated the school office and Reference Library, earning the PJK in 1973. He was later reassigned to La Salle Petaling Jaya.
Bro. James Macken (13 February 1975 - 28 February 1991)
An Irish Brother transferred from St. Xavier’s, Penang, he became the school’s longest-serving Director. He also served as Director of the National College, Kota Kinabalu.
